State of the Series Address

So this isn't exactly the State of the Union, but I've been needing to give an update on the series for some time now, but I was waiting on a couple factors before I did so.  Since those factors have been met, I give to you the December 11th State of the Series Address given before a joint session of... um... well definitely not Congress.  Moving on.

The first thing I wanted to let everyone know that there is a forum set up on:
for anyone who would like to discuss the world, the characters, nearly anything regarding The Children of Man series while they wait for Render to be released.

This next announcement is the one about which I'm probably the most excited.  My debut novel, Shatter (The Children of Man, #1), has reached a milestone that I really never thought feasible for an unknown indie author like me.  Shatter was published in print May 3, 2010.  By the end of June, I made it available as an e-book.  In that time Shatter has been either purchased or downloaded by over 50,000 individuals.  In fact, it's actually closing in on 55,000 this week.  Wow.  I mean really.  Just wow.  Do you have any idea how improbable that is for an indie author within the first sixth month of publication much less AT ALL?  It doesn't seem real to me honestly.

To give you some context for why this is so mind boggling for me, Publisher's Weekly in 2006 said that
“[o]f the 950,000 titles out of the 1.2 million tracked by Nielsen Bookscan sold fewer than 99 copies. Another 200,000 sold fewer than 1,000 copies. Only 25,000 sold more than 5,000 copies. The average book in America sells about 500 copies.”
-- Publisher’s Weekly, July 17, 2006
Granted, I realize that I've reached these numbers, because I've offered the book for free, however, it's just the first book in a series.  Not only has Shatter been picked up by over 50,000 people, the reviews and comments I've received on the series have been overwhelming positive with some valid constructive criticism along the way.  I am all about constructive criticism.  Some people crave praise; I crave criticism.  How else is an author supposed to improve?

Speaking of which here's a roundup of places to read reviews of Shatter:

Also, in exciting news, smashwords (my e-book distributor) has reached an agency model contract with the retailers to whom they distribute.  This is a very good thing for indie authors, because this means that we can set the price for our titles, which means even more platforms are offering Shatter for free now.  Regardless of which e-reader or e-reader application you have, there is a version of Shatter available for free.  And the peasants rejoiced! Okay, so I rejoiced.  There really isn't much of a difference, I promise.

On to the part that you all actually probably care about, the status of Render, the second book in the series.  Just like last year, I took part in NaNoWriMo in November.  I've passed the 100,000 mark for word count and draft zero of Render is shaping up to be around 150,000 words.  I had hoped for a Winter/Spring release for it, but that just won't be feasible.  I finished draft zero of Shatter on Christmas Eve last year and finishing Shatter at the end of December last year gave me a May release.  There's no chance this draft will be finished by the end of December.  I am not expecting, however, that the editing will take as much time with this draft.  It won't need nearly the in-depth work that Shatter required.  Having gone through this process once before, I have a much better idea of how to handle the drafting, the rewrites, and the edits this time around.  Therefore, my new deadline will be a solid Summer 2011 release for Render.  It's a priority to me to make sure that I don't rush to get the second book out before it's ready for public consumption, so that means you'll have to wait a little while longer for the next installment in the story.

Any way, I just wanted to thank you so much again to everyone out there who's picked up my book!  Happy reading!

I'm really glad to hear things are going so well for you! I'm looking forward to Render, and I couldn't be happier that you'll have a growing audience to release it to.

No pressure, welcome to the end of the Indieverse in which I drift. :D
Oh, gosh, no pressure indeed... *eye twitches* But you're so sweet. It really is so nice to have a friend like you with whom I can commiserate and of whom I can ask endless questions about navigating these indie waters. :D

Hi, I am one of those 55,000 that saw an interesting looking book in the kindle store, and hey it was free, and I was broke, so why not? And within 5 minuets of finishing the book I was here looking for news on the next one, so I guess that goes to show that in at least one case it worked for ya. I love that digitization can make it possible to get new and interesting stuff out to the people who want it, thanks for taking the leap.

Diana
Thank you so much, Diana! I'm so pleased to hear that you enjoyed it. :) I'm couldn't agree with you more about the opportunities that technology has afforded indie authors. I know I'm extremely grateful!

I absolutely agree with Dinan. I am a massive sci-fi / fantasy genre fan (albeit a little more closetted now that I am also a middle aged mother) and I stumbled across your book by accident by following one of those mammoth click through sessions which ends up who knows where... anyway I am rambling, long story short, I loved Shatter and am over the moon that Render won't be too long in the making.

I will also be buying the books when all three are out because I have a bookshelf full of equally accomplished writers that you deserve a place among.

I just finished Shatter recently and was really impressed. The characters and story are well done and I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

Editing wise the first book is a little rough especially at the beginning when being introduced to a barrage of characters/storylines/locations that were hard to keep straight.

I really hope you give more background on the whole world/universe in general in the next book. Conflict/Cities/Governments/Types of Magic were mentioned but I never felt like I got a real grasp how the whole of them fit together.

That said Shatter rates up there with some of the better fantasy books I read recently.

Just started Shatter last week, as it was free in the Kindle Store, and I've been searching for a fantasy tale with some of the common elements I grew up with, but with a different spin.

So far, so great. Thanks for writing and making this book available for free. It's a great way to introduce your art to all of us.

I must say I just finished Shatter today, having downloaded it free from Kindle. I honestly can't wait to get Render on Kindle and I don't care if I have to pay for it or not. Like another reader said, within 5 minutes of finishing Shatter, I was on Amazon.com trying to find the next book. Please, please - make it available on Kindle as soon as possible after publishing!

I've been reading SciFi and Fantasy for over 50 years. Shatter is brilliant. I'm recommending it to my brother-in-law, which is no mean compliment. The beginning was a bit of a struggle, but it all came together extremely well Can't wait for Render. I'll gladly pay for it but please on Kindle as I live in Egypt.
Thank you for all the kind words! I'm just so happy that readers are enjoying my story and characters. :D I know that I love them to pieces. It's gratifying that others seem to as well.

I am most definitely planning on releasing the e-book version simultaneously with the print version. Kindle and smashwords have been very, very good to me. I'm also a big proponent of e-books and happen to be a complete technophile. So never fear, "Render" will be available on kindle asap.

I've never read a book without knowing ANYTHING about it. I downloaded Shatter for my Kindle and of course, there's no synopsis on the back to clue me in to the storyline or what to expect. It was interesting to dive in with no preconceptions or expectations. Just... WOW. I rarely read fantasy, so I'm glad I was thrown into this book blind or I might never have picked it up. The story kept me glued from page one and I love a good plot twist and there are tons of them in there. The only down side to reading this book totally blind was getting to the last page and flipping over to find the author bio and not more story. I had no idea it was a series! So I had a minor fit and immediately googled the hell out of your name to find out when I can expect my next fix. Here's hoping it will be soon.
@V: Thank you so much! I can honestly say that you're the first person to ever tell me that you "googled the hell out of my name." Definitely made me laugh. I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed something outside your normal reading fare and that I was able to write something in fantasy that you liked! "Render" is incoming this summer, if I survive grading research papers. :)

I just finished the book last night and I can't wait for the next one! I really enjoyed the story and the interplay between the characters and I want to know more NOW lol. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much, Eustacia! I'm so happy you liked it. I'm hoping to post another teaser from "Render" soon. It's not the full story, but it's better than nothing. :)

Hi! I posted earlier about the tentative release date of "Render" but in going through your various posts, I figured out the answer! I'll be waiting with bated breath for its release. I absolutely devoured "Shatter" - thank you so much for letting readers like me into the fabulous world you created in your imagination. I can't wait to re-enter it with the release of "Render." I'd also like to thank you for taking a non-conventional approach to publishing your book and offering it for free first! I don't know if I would have even thought to read it otherwise!!! Now I'm definitely obsessed and willing to pay for any future books you publish (what a great way to introduce the public to your writing). I wish you the best of luck and have no doubt this is the beginning of a wonderful career for you (I can see a future movie in the works here, no joke). Good luck! I'll be keeping my eye out for anything written by you from here on out :)
Aw, thank you so much for such kind words, Zahra. It means so much to me to hear from my readers. :)
